The Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences course is in demand as the graduates can get good jobs both at home and abroad

In the wake of the growing popularity of alternative systems of medicine in recent years, the demand for courses in these academic streams has increased among the students. Among such courses the Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences (BNYS) is much sought after as the graduates can look forward to bright career opportunities both at home and abroad.

Although the awareness regarding the potential of this course is comparatively less, those who have opted to study BNYS are reaping the benefits. A large number of such graduates work abroad, which has in turn created a shortage of hands at home. The BNYS graduates land jobs with attractive pay packages soon after they complete internship. As the number of seats is limited, the number of meritorious students queuing up to join this course is increasing. “Majority of my classmates are well settled abroad and those who opted to stay at home too are enjoying a good career. Awareness about this drugless system of cure is increasing in society. Opportunities have opened up in the public sector too after the government set up the Department of AYUSH,” said Priyanka Patil, doctor at AYUSH, Dharwad. Dr. Priyanka, who had chosen to join BNYS through the Common Entrance Test (CET), said Naturopathy seeks to improve health and treat diseases chiefly by assisting the body's innate self-healing capacity to recover from illness and injury.

It is a holistic system of cure in the true sense and a good way to treat obesity, hypertension, diabetes and other ailments which are spreading at an alarming rate.

P. Saranyan, Principal, Sant Haridaram Medical College of Naturopathy and Yogic Science, Bhopal, said the course in naturopathy and yogic sciences has earned credibility as well as recognition after the scientific committee appointed by the Union Government qualified it to be called a stand alone medical science. “Since then the colleges offering these courses have been better equipped and BNYS came into the mainstream medical entrance test. Today the institutionally qualified BNYS graduates are sought after in all streams of medical science and even the State Health Department appoints them as Class A medical officers.”

As the concept of integrated medicine to ensure speedy recovery of the patients is gaining momentum in the medical field, BNYS graduates are getting a chance to work in state-of-the-art medical science institutes. They mainly work as associate physicians with cardiologists, oncologists, psychologists and others.

Moreover, the growing trend of medical tourism all over the globe has brought in radical changes in the concepts of spas and resorts. Today the medical spa and theme-based health resorts have become the order of the day and this new trend in turn has created a demand for BNYS graduates who are appointed as assistant spa managers at the entry-level itself. Major players in this field are the corporates and multinational companies running star hotels.

Curriculum

In BNYS, 50 per cent of the curriculum is equal to MBBS. The BNYS graduates possessing knowledge of yoga practice and therapy enjoy a huge advantage in the job market. At home, the pay package starts at Rs. 20,000-25,000 but it can increase within a year or two as the employers start hunting for talented persons in the job market, Dr. Saranyan said.

These graduates are in demand in cruise liners too. Here, the pay package starts at Rs. 60,000 per month plus other facilities.
